A DAY OUT IN ALICANTE – Comaskey Properties

One thing I have to recommend is making the effort to go into Alicante and enjoy a day out there. Something in particular that many art lovers will enjoy is MACA or the Contemporary Art Museums, which is one of the finest contemporary art collections in Spain
MACA is housed inside a Baroque building from 1685, called Casa de La Asegurada. This is the city’s oldest surviving civil building, originally designed as a warehouse for cereals. Prior to becoming a museum, the building was also used as a business school. The Contemporary Art Museum (MACA), known also as the Museo de la Asegurada, was opened in 2010. It houses one of the most important contemporary art collections in the country. You can admire artwork by many internationally acclaimed artists of the XXth century, including Dali, Cocteau, Miro, Bacon, Picasso, and many others and the museum is free.

It has three permanent collections: the collection of 20th-century art, which includes works by Miró, Dalí, Juan Gris and Julio González; the Juana Francés Collection, donated by the artist on her death in 1990; and the Eusebio Sempere Collection, acquired by Alicante Town Council since 1997.

Eusebio Sempere (3 April 1923–10 April 1985) was a Spanish sculptor, painter and graphic artist whose abstract geometric works make him the most representative artist of the Kinetic art movement in Spain and one of Spain’s foremost artists. His work really is beautiful and quite incredible and the museum is definitely worth a visit.

There’s nothing more famous in Alicante than the stunning fortress on the top of Mount Benacantil. Castle of Santa Barbara which is the most visited and most photographed of all Alicante’s attractions. The fortress dominates the city, and everything else rests in its shadow, obscured by its greatness. You simply cannot miss it. But don’t miss other Alicante attractions, such as Castle of San Fernando, in the north part of Alicante centre, or the lovely old centre of the city, with its narrow streets, the town hall and the cathedral. There are an abundance of restaurants, cafes and bars with something for everyone and it is not particularly difficult to park in Alicante.
Go and explore and have fun…!
